Classic Cinephiles Take #4 … and Hitchcock makes an appearance!

…well, I mean, no Hitchcock doesn’t have a mysterious cameo in this week’s Classic Cinephiles video like he used to in his movies. That would be creepy. And kinda cool. But mostly creepy.

However, Clay Morgan and I are taking on Alfred Hitchock this week. Specifically, a certain Hitchcock flick I wasn’t previously all that familiar with.

Suspicion stars Cary Grant and JeanJoan Fontaine. I realized in rewatching our video that I’m a little harsh on this one. Or at least not as gushy as usual. I don’t know, maybe I’m just biased against films I have to attempt to watch three times before successfully staying awake.

Just kidding. I mean, not kidding about falling asleep the first two attempts. But the movie does have lots of cool things about it, not the least of which is how it really does keep you in suspense up to the very end as to whether Cary Grant is a good guy or bad guy.

Enjoy, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments. (Oh, and please don’t let the fact that during this video both Clay and I profess our dislike for a certain well-loved Christmas movie turn you against us. It’s not our fault we have good taste.)

Okay, so have you seen Suspicion? What did you think? What’s your favorite Hitchcock movie?

p.s. I’m heading out of town this week–yay–so that means a little blogging break. No posts on Wednesday and Friday. See ya again next Monday. 🙂

    1. I have never seen a Hitchcock movie so I can’t pick a fav or give any comments on this. Since I’m not a big “thriller” fan I doubt I’ll ever watch any but who knows?! And even though I haven’t seen this movie I still enjoyed the discussion! I have to say I’m with you two on the dislike of A Christmas Story! I’ve only seen it once and that was enough!
As for suggestions for future episodes here are some of my favorite “classic” movies:
      Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
      On the Town
      How to Marry a Millionaire
      Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
      Holiday Inn
      Summer Stock
      Kiss Me Kate
      Calamity Jane

      1. How to Marry a Millionaire is one of my faves…completely because of Lauren Bacall. I think she’s fabulous in general. There are some inside jokes in that movie, too, about Humphrey Bogart…she says something at one point about “that old guy in The African Queen.” 🙂

I’m watching Seven Brides this week with some friends actually. 🙂

    2. So fun, I’m not a scary movie person. I have to say The Christmas Story is still hilarious to me 🙂 Have a great week with writing power friends!

      1. It’s okay, we can still be friends even if you like Christmas Story. 🙂

Suspicion isn’t really all that scary as much as it is suspenseful. A lot of Hitchcock films are that way, though…

      1. Okay, The Birds made me laugh. I don’t know why, but I thought it was so funny. Of course, anytime I see a bunch of birds in one place I do get a little freaked out. It probably would’ve scared me more if it was chickens instead of birds. I HATE chickens…so. much.

    3. I haven’t seen this one either and probably never will. But I’m enjoying you guys a lot! And I can forgive your not liking A Christmas Story, but I don’t understand it at all, lol.

    4. I haven’t seen Suspicion and like the others, probably won’t. That said, I do like most Alfred Hitchcock movies, especially Psycho. I also liked Rear Window staring Jimmy Stewart. Which brings me to the movie Harvey. I would love to see you discuss that movie!

      1. Harvey! I haven’t watched that in SO long…that movie makes me so ridiculously happy. Elwood P Dowd and his invisible giant bunny… 🙂 And of course, Jimmy Stewart is beyond wonderful in it.

    5. I’m not sure we can still be friends since you hate The Christmas Story. I LOVE it. But then again, part of that is because it was my mom’s favorite. I’m curious why you hate it. You can’t just say that and not back it up. 😉

Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow!!! Okay, we can still be friends. I’m too excited to let a little disagreement keep up apart.

      1. Okay, it is sweet that you love Christmas Story because your mom did. For that reason, I almost don’t want to go in to why I dislike it so much. 🙂 Let’s just say, I’m very picky about my Christmas movies…and for whatever reason, when I watch that one, it’s just not funny to me. Possibly because in my head I’m always upset that I’m not watching It’s a Wonderful Life or White Christmas or Christmas in Connecticut or Holiday Inn or other Christmas classics instead. 🙂

And of course we are still friends…I mean, you don’t share my love for Diet Coke with Lime or Coldplay or flannel and I still love you, so I think we’re all good.

      1. Ooh, if you want to see a non-scary Hitchcock movie, you should try Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It’s one of Hitchcock’s only rom-coms (maybe his only one?) and it stars Carole Lombard (who I think is awesome) and Robert Montgomery. It’s funny!

    6. Okay I am LOVING these videos! 🙂 I like Suspicion, but I’d rank it as a 2nd or maybe even 3rd-tier Hitchcock film for me. I always have a REALLY HARD TIME when people ask me what my favorite Hitchcock film is, so here’s my top five: North by Northwest, To Catch a Thief, Rear Window, Shadow of a Doubt, and The Trouble With Harry. 🙂

Here, I do love how Grant plays against type for a change…and I think Hitchcock does a great job teasing out tension in the Grant/Fontaine relationship.

      1. I agree with you on the second or third tier assignment for Suspicion. I can watch North by Northwest and To Catch a Thief over and over. Rear Window is amazing too…oh, and Vertigo. I think Jimmy Stewart is amazing in Vertigo. I love Rebecca too.

    7. Rear Window!! My favorite Hitchcock movie because it’s a “director’s” movie. The camera angles and the director’s eye make this movie suspenseful. That’s why the remake with Christopher Reeve wasn’t very good.

Have fun at the conference! …and A Christmas Story is a CLASSIC!

      1. I agree on rear window, too, Ruth! Also, there’s so much quiet in that movie…moments where the camera is peering in through the window and we hear what’s going on, but no crazy background music…it really puts you right in that apartment with Jimmy Stewart.

Okay, but can a movie made in the 1980s really be called a classic yet?!?! J/K…I know a lot of people love CS. That’s okay. We can still be friends. 🙂

    8. I’m not very big on Hitchcock movies. I haven’t seen this one, but just by your intro on wondering about Cary Grant it made me think of Charade–now that’s a Cary Grant movie I loved!

    9. Love Hitchcock but wouldn’t list Suspicion as one of my favorites. I think it would have been better if he’d kept his original ending.

That said, I don’t know how anyone could fall asleep watching Cary Grant. Unless it causes you to dream about Cary Grant. 🙂 The best Cary/Alfred movie: Notorious, with North by Northwest coming in a close second.

On a side note, to me Olivia de Havilland will always be Catherine Sloper in The Heiress. Fantastic movie.

      1. I think I’m with you, that the original ending would’ve been more fun. I guess I understand the studio being wary of tampering with Cary Grant’s image, but I think women would’ve forgiven him. 🙂

If I’ve seen The Heiress, I totally don’t remember it…hmm, definitely one to check out!

    10. YOU DON’T LIKE A CHRISTMAS STORY?

That’s pretty much how we knew my brother’s first marriage was doomed, because she didn’t want to watch it with the rest of the family on Christmas Eve. I’m just sayin.

I haven’t seen this one, but I loved Rear Window!
