*This* writer’s creative process

Okay, so I saw this hilarious pie chart making the rounds on facebook a couple weeks ago:

Oh my word, so true, right?
Well, close.
The truth is, there are quite a few more slices to my personal creative process pie. I thought I’d share. FYI, the proper way to view this photo is starting at the top with “Muse,” the orange slice, and going clock-wise.

Now, I realize my artistic skills aren’t quite on par with Bob Ross. But hey, my hair is almost as frizzy. Besides, a person can only get so artsy with dry erase markers. And I think the hearts were a nice touch.

If you’re a creative type, what slice would you add to the pie chart?

    1. I would have to add crafting in some way, whether it is making cards out of scrapbook paper, calligraphy, redoing/spray painting furniture…whatever…it is my way of procrastinating AND being creative in the process!

      1. Hehe, I am nothing if not a loyal devotee. 🙂

Oh yeah, I definitely should’ve added blogging. I can’t tell you how many blog posts grew out putting off my other writing.

    2. LOL! You are so funny! Trying on your Prom dress! I know mine won’t fit. I haven’t seen size 2 in a gazillion years…well, since Prom!

I’d have to add a healthy, or maybe not so healthy but an indulgent slice to TV…because I just love TV. Research purposes of course! Ha!

      1. Haha, pretty sure I haven’t seen size 2 in a lot longer than that. 🙂 For the record, I actually CAN fit into the dress…it’s just not an entirely pretty picture.

TV totally counts as research. As do movies. 🙂

    3. Let’s see … I would need a slice for “mulling.”
And a slice for “chores that have to be done but I’d rather be writing but nothing is coming to mind so let me throw in a load of laundry and maybe I’ll get brilliant all of a sudden.”
And another slice for “interruptions” — and then I’d list people’s names.
      And another slice for …

Yeah, gonna have fun with this!

    4. I love you. I just…I do. You make me giggle! And yes, the hearts were awesome.

I would add reading to the list…whether it be craft books or just other people’s novels. There is something about holding someone else’s book in my hands that makes me remember how hard work can pay off…it’s inspiring!

      1. Oh yes, reading! Definitely. Although, for me, reading fits into the elliptical slice (yay for Kindles that let me read while working out) and the bubble bath slice. I totally count my daily fiction intake as research!

        Love you too!

      2. Yep, me too! But question…do you read your Kindle in the tub? I’d be afraid to drop it! I usually use a paperback in the tub, but the Kindle on the elliptical (so that means I have two stories going at once…not normal for me, but you gotta do what you gotta do).

    5. Trying on your old prom dress and caffeinating! That’s hilarious! I seriously need to make one of these. I’d have pieces of pie that say, “labeling things with my label maker”, “reading first chapters of numerous books but never finishing them”, and “making plans to do things I’m never going to have time for because I’m too busy making plans.” Love this post!

    6. HA! I don’t even know where my old prom dress it:) I’d add a slice simply named “avoidance”…those times where I’ll even clean the toilets to keep from having to sit at my computer and fight with the voices in my head. Truly. If I created you, you’d think you’d cooperate with me…

    7. I’m with Sherrinda…I’d have to add crafting to my pie chart. When I can’t write, I craft. It helps get the creative juices going. Love your pieces of pie. 🙂

      1. Oh, you crafty people. 🙂 I always see cool crafts people make but I know deep down while they end up with a pretty frame or something, I’ll end up with globs of glue and frayed ribbons and broken popsicle sticks. Hehe…

    8. This is TOO cute, Melissa! I’d have to add, playing with my puppies for writing inspiration. Yeah, I really have gotten a number of inspirational/devotional ideas from our retrievers! And I must say whoever came up with ‘inspirational napping’ was a genius!! God bless!

    9. Oh my word that was funny! You know, I don’t see Pinterest on there anywhere – that takes up way more of my time than I’d like to admit! And couponing. I spend a lot of my time clipping coupons. It’s a means to an end, right?

      1. Haha, absolutely a means to an end. I actually don’t use Pinterest. I decided I’d get waaaay too addicted. So, I’m still avoiding it. I have a feeling I may give in one day, though… 🙂

    10. Too funny. I wish I was an inspirational napper. I wish I was a napper, period. It probably would cut down on my staring-at-the-wall time. I’d have to add an evening walk with my dog and husband to my own personal pie chart. And reading….both writing craft books (during the day) as well as fiction at night. Thanks for making me think about how I’m actually using my time. 🙂

    11. I love this. Although I wonder if it’s to scale because it feels like you spend a disproportionate amount of time in your prom dress and practicing the award speech. Together, they’re almost a quarter of the total.
I think you should put them together and post a video. Just sayin’. And don’t forget to thank Tim. =)

      1. Hehehe, ummm, obviously I would not make a good architect if I can’t even draw a pie chart to scale. 🙂 And…the video thing is a hilariously good idea…and it’d be another stunningly good use of time, for sure. Great idea for a future random Monday post… 🙂
