How one theme song can totally spice up your everyday life

DowntonAbbey1So, the other day I was sitting at a red light in a busy intersection.

And sitting…and sitting…and sitting…

When suddenly the theme music for Downton Abbey started playing in my car. And instantly, my wait turned exciting. Nay, dramatic. All because of the song.

(Never heard the Downton Abbey theme? A) Um, it’s time to BBC-ify your life and B) You can listen here.)

So I’m sitting there, feeling like surely one of the other cars at the stoplight is going to betray me or the older one behind me is going to whip out a snarky quip a la the Dowager Countess or someone somewhere is going to do something scandalous…and I realized: the Downton Abbey theme music is the PERFECT way to turn everyday ordinary tasks into drama-rich activity worthy of a British soap.

Life a little too drama-free? Need a little spice? Well, consider listening to the Downton Abbey soundtrack during the following activities:

Brushing your teeth
You won’t be able to help imagining your cavities fleeing like Branson from the authorities. Just don’t get too into it lest you injure your gums. (Okay, am I the only one who really didn’t like Branson until after Sybil died?)

Making your bed
Suddenly this task will feel critical to your ENTIRE future…as vital as Lord Grantham’s valet getting his shirts ironed.

Eating lunch
Now, some people might’ve thought I’d suggest breakfast because supposedly it’s the most important meal of the day. Or dinner because it’s like the capstone of a person’s daily consumption, right? But no…I say lunch. Because if you’re anything like me, your lunch is generally hurried and consists of whatever random finds you come across in your fridge or cupboards. I’m telling you, scavenging for a bag of baby carrots or spoonful of peanut butter becomes SO much more exciting with the right soundtrack.

Trying to decide what to wear in the morning
As nail-biting as it was watching Matthew and Mary try to decide whether they belong together? Yup, that’s how heart-racing this decision will become. (I might skip this one, though, because I generally have a hard enough time finding clean clothes to wear…I don’t think I need any more drama in my walk-in.)

Racing to your car in inclement weather—like a thunderstorm
Of course, I’m not exactly sure how you’re going to listen to the music while running to your vehicle…earbuds? Either way, it totally ups the “Can I make it to my car without getting soaked or struck by lightning?” ante.

First email check of the day
Especially if you’re waiting for an important email.

During boring PowerPoints
I swear, there is nothing more grating in the WHOLE world than a bad PowerPoint. But I could forgive all the all-caps, crowded, animation-heavy, messy slides in the world with the right music to make me feel like the information I’m reading is red hot and outrageous.

Dusting
Because it is the most mundane of housekeeping chores in real life. But on Downton Abbey they somehow manage to make it feel life-changing.

Your turn! What piece of your everyday life could use a little additional drama? (Or do you despise drama or have too much of it already or wonder why in the world anyone would want to add more?)

      AHAHAHAHAHA!! This was BRILLIANT!!!

Oh my, you are priceless! This was hysterical!

How about???? Loading the dishwasher and NOT KNOWING what to load next!!!!

I’m going to be smiling all day with this in my head.

Haha, thanks, Jennifer. I sorta had fun writing it. Ooh, I like your dishwasher idea only for me, it’d be unloading the dishwasher…which is probably my least favorite of all household chores. Thus, dishes just languish in there once they’re clean…

    2. I could use the added drama of the theme music as I walk from my upstairs to my downstairs where I’ll be working like a servant in my laundry room! It would be a lot more interesting to enter the basement and have a whole new world of intrigue to keep me company!!! 🙂 (I suppose finding random “gifts” in the laundry shoot from my twins is a little intriguing… Most recently? Asher’s overnight diaper…that was a bit surprising and dramatic.)

    3. Bahaha! Love it! How about exercising…especially running? I mean, I’m sure I already look dramatic when I (attempt to) run…but at least I’d have an excuse if I was listening to this soundtrack, right? Right? Right.

YES how in the world did I leave that off the list? Except I don’t run…but I do work out. It so should’ve made the cut above. I’m totally going to listen to DA next time I workout…

    4. Let’s see…you’ve covered most of them. How about grocery shopping? I could sometimes use a pick-me-up as I slog past all the artery-hardening goodies that aren’t good for me. Drat those lard-laden Little Debbies! 🙂

Great laughs today, Melissa! And I needed them:)

    6. Confession – I’ve never seen the show. Not one episode. I know…the horror! My coworker adores it. She has the theme song as her ring tone. I’ll send her your link, she’ll get a kick out of it. 🙂

Cool, thanks for sharing it. And no worries on never seeing DA. You know, it’s not for everyone. It is pure soap, really…but it’s British soap, so that somehow makes it okay. 🙂
