Dog days of summer.

I just typed that headline above and had the sudden realization that I really have no idea what “dog days of summer” even means. If someone wants to enlighten me, the comments section awaits your wisdom.

Yesterday, I posted the following photo on Facebook. It’s a photo of my sister’s dog, Rocky, in which his pose perfectly mirrored my mental energy level:

Doesn’t he look exhausted? Guess all that playing with chew toys, eating
and laying around IS draining.

But then, I remembered this photo of Rocky…and I had to share because it’s like the happiest dog photo ever.

Seriously…don’t you just want to go hug someone right now?

So, that’s all for today. Just a happy dog photo. (See previously mentioned energy level…) But I’d love to know…

What has you smiling this Friday?

    1. I confess, by this time in the summer I find it harder to smile. I just want my schedule back! But my youngest son, who has been gone all week, comes home today, so I can smile about that. And the car we thought was unfixable has been fixed–and at a reasonable price! Another reason to smile. But if I could get these revisions finished and sent? That would be the biggest smile of all! 🙂

      1. I can understand that feeling of just wanting a normal schedule back…not that I have kids home during the summer, but I had a crazy season of constant travel awhile back. I just wanted normalcy for awhile! 🙂 Yay for cars being fixed…and may your book meet the same fate soon. 🙂

    2. The Dog Days of Summer comes from early times and has to do with constellations. Canis Major rises and sets with the sun, and the ancients believed that it added heat (you know how hot a dog makes you in the summer when it insists on getting right up under you) to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather. During late July Sirius is in conjunction with the sun and the 20 days before the conjunction to 20 days after, were called “dog days.” Now isn’t that more than you ever wanted to know? lol

    3. Very appropriate title to match these photos, Melissa. 🙂 It’s been crazy hot/humid around here – so hopefully this weekend’s cooler air will feel nice.

Hmm… can I just be smiling because it’s Friday!? That seems reason enough. 😉

    4. We’ve also been experiencing some HOT and HUMID weather here in central Minnesota. It’s supposed to start cooling down and hovering in the 70’s and 80’s this week! Blessed relief. 🙂 I’m smiling today because I have my house cleaned before 11 a.m. and the whole time I was thinking about my barnstorming story!! Love Rocky’s photos. 🙂

      1. I don’t even mind crazy heat, but humidity makes me SO lethargic…it is not my friend. 🙂

And having a clean house is great and thinking about your next book, even better. OOH you should come down to Iowa sometime for a Barnstormers game…I mean, arena football really has nothing to do with flying planes except for our team name…and I’m pretty sure their season just ended…but still… 🙂

      1. Nope, I’m not a dog owner–not because I don’t love them. I do. A lot. BUT I’d be a horrible owner at this point in life…I’m usually gone most of the day and travel more weekends than not…so the poor thing would always be lonely and cooped up, which would be sad. But someday…

    5. Sending my proposal to Beth to get her opinion has me smiling pretty wide today. 😀

I found this description of the “dog days of summer” on ask.com:
“The dog days of summer is a phrase referring to the the hottest days of summer. In the United States dog days of summer are from early July to early September.”

      Blessings!
      Andrea

      1. Yes, it matches Texas weather too.

All the feedback I’ve gotten so far has helped me take my writing to a new level. (Thanks for your two cents’ worth!) I’m so blessed to have such sweet friends.
