Mega birthday fun…

…not that it’s my birthday today.

Although, my birthday IS just six weeks away and though I’m not accustomed to making birthday gift lists for myself, I did realize the other the day what the perfect gift would be for moi:

Happy birthday, brotha!

An autotune microphone!!

Oh my goodness, the fun I could have with that. Sure, I’d probably annoy everyone within earshot, but still.

Today is my little brother’s birthday! A milestone he shares with…Tim Tebow.

For the record, I love my brother a lot more than Tim Tebow. After all, I actually know my brother. He’s super cool, super hilarious and writes a mean poem. And by “mean” I mean awesome, not bully-ish. Although, if we still used “bully” to mean “superb” the way Theodore Roosevelt did, then okay, he writes bully poems.

SO happy birthday, Nathanael Tagg. Please know that in celebration I’m playing a game of basketball with you (and losing) in my mind. Love ya!

Guess who else’s figurative birthday it is today!

Sarah Varland

You’re the winner of last week’s drawing for an advanced reader copy of my first book, Made to Last!** (I used random.org to determine the winner.)

I got a delivery alert from UPS just yesterday which means I just may get my author copies today…so if ya’ll hear squeals carried on the wind sometime today, know they’re probably from Iowa. Sarah, if you could email me your mailing address at
melissa [at] melissatagg [dot] com, I’ll have your copy in the mail ASAP.

It’s like Old Spice thought it was my birthday when they released their latest hilarious commercial. I’ve loved Old Spice commercials ever since “I’m on a horse” and “swan dive” dissolved me into giggles.

Well, someone there must’ve known I wrote a book about a homebuilder, because they recently released this commercial. I just know it was a personal gift to me. Enjoy!

Okay, let’s pretend today’s your birthday and you get to pick out one silly gift…what do you pick?

*And to think, the only famous person I know with whom I share a birthday is Janeane Garofalo aka worst-ever addition to 24.
**And in case anyone is curious, the answers to last week’s questions are:
1) Blake Hunziker. Hunziker is the last name of the guy who called me for help constantly.
2) Robbie was my frog dissecting hero in fifth grade.
3) Matthew is the first name I love and Knox the last name my sister picked out. 🙂

    1. Oh my word … I love those Old Spice commercials!
      Happy birthday to your brother!
And I am waiting … waiting … waiting for photos of your UPS delivery!

Silly birthday gift? Um, a llama …but just for the day. Maybe a llama hike. They do that — you can hike with a pack-llama.

      1. Haha, well, it’s possible that it’s not actually my books being delivered…all I know is it’s a package coming from the publisher. But I’m hopeful!

Hiking with a pack-llama? That would be too hilarious.

      2. True story… when I was just out in Colorado visiting my cousin, someone from her church told us about her son recently buying llamas so he can train them to run with him and run in llama races.

    2. YEAH! I hope you get them today:)

Total fan of Old Spice commercials too!

Bday gift? I want one of those retro bikes, in a light blue, with a basket on front and a huge honkin’ seat for my rear end. Oh. And a bell. I need a bell.

      1. Susan, I had a good chuckle! My husband loves a good bike, so he bought me this super sporty, sleek bike with the world’s worst seat. Seriously, one bike ride and I was complaining for a week about the pain! So, I went out and bought the widest seat I could find! 🙂 He gives me a hard time, but what’s the point of riding bike when you can’t sit down for the next five days??

      2. LOVE it…both of you. Susan, I really hope you get that bike sometime–complete with basket and bell.

And I hope I get my books too. Fingers crossed but it COULD definitely be something else. You never know. But I can hope.

    3. I can’t wait for you to pick up those books! I’m thinking that must be one of the coolest moments on this journey. 🙂 Keep us posted!!

I get a kick out of those Old Spice commercials, too. This one was funny!

For a silly birthday gift…I’d like a vat of cookie dough today. 🙂 Maybe it’s all that talk of monster cookies on Facebook yesterday, but now I’m craving them!

      1. I’ll definitely let ya know if it’s the books. 🙂

Oh my goodness, a vat of cookie dough…that’d be, like, heaven…yeah, pretty sure there WILL be cookie dough vats in heaven.

    4. I hope today is chock-full of celebrations, for your birthday boy brother, of course, and for you, Melissa, as the UPS man makes a milestone delivery of your debut novel. I fully expect to hear the whoops and hollers all the way out here in California. At the very least, I hope to see pictures–still and video footage if possible. Congratulations in advance!

      1. Sadly my brother lives out in New Jersey so I won’t get to celebrate with him in person, but I can from afar. 🙂 And yes, if I get the books, there will be squealing. 🙂

    5. Yay for getting your books (hopefully) today!!! Eeek!!! If you hear cheering back, it’ll be me in AZ. 😉

A silly gift…hmmmm. How about a body double to work for me today so I can finish my revisions. Or read. Or watch movies.

      Man, I need a vacation.

      1. Ohhhh I hope it’s the books. BUT it’s okay if it’s not…because I know they’re coming eventually… 🙂 Still…hoping!

Oh man, I love the idea of a body double. That would help me in so many areas of life.

Thankfully you get a vacation really soon. Yay!

    6. *Smiling big* Love your blog posts, Melissa, you always brighten my day 🙂 A big time happy birthday to your kid brother, love the way you describe him!
Also, super congrats to Sarah for winning a copy of your book, so cool!!
Will be listening for your squeal, it’s such a joy to celebrate this time with you 🙂
      Hugs and blessings girl!

    7. Whatdya mean I didn’t win! Boo! 😉

Okay. Over it. Happy brother Birthday to you and yours. Love seeing pics of your adorable nephew. 🙂

Silly gift… how ’bout a pound of bananas. To match my yellow kitchen. And we’d make banana shakes, smoothies, pie and pancakes. In one day, before they all spoiled and turned brown. Love me some bananas. Probably not quite “silly” but if the card said, “You drive me bananas. And if you don’t stop, I’ll pound you.”… yeah. Needs major editing. To avoid getting blacklisted. Or arrested.

      1. Ohhh sorry you didn’t win, Raj. But I can guarantee there will be other giveaways. Or you know, it’s available at stores and online. HA!

Mmmm…bananas. I love banana bread. I have like six black bananas in my freezer waiting to be made into banana bread. I’m really good at letting them get old and saying, oh well, I’ll make banana bread. It’s the actual making of the banana bread I’m not as good at. 🙂

    8. Yay! Happy birthday to your brother. 🙂

LOL, I had to laugh at your remark about 24. She was a “bad” addition – for reasons that had nothing to do with her acting. 😉

Never mind sequels from you, Melissa – I will be excited for you! Hope they arrived. 🙂

Congrats to the winner. That’s awesome for Sarah. 🙂

      1. Haha, glad I’m not the only one who was soooo not happy with her character on 24. Seriously, she just made me scowl. 🙂 I’ve been wanting to rewatch all the seasons of 24. I’m just not sure I’m ready for the intensity…I get sooo nervous during it.
