It’s my super happy pleasure to welcome Jill Lynn Buteyn to the blog today. In addition to being a wonderful author, Jill shares a very important obsession with me: Parenthood…the TV show. I’ve kinda not known what to do with myself TV-wise since the show ended last year. Like, what am I supposed to do on Thursday night’s without my weekly weepfest?

Thankfully the show is on Netflix these days, which makes binging the perfect solution…and that’s what Jill is talking about today. She’s also generously giving away a copy of her latest book, Her Texas FamilyCheck out the post and enter the giveaway below!

Recovery from a Netflix Binge

Jill-Lynn-Headshot-e1435757045485I am always a step behind. Maybe a year or two or three behind. That’s why I only recently started watching Parenthood on Netflix. Talk about a binge watch! I’d heard people talk about the show over the years, but I’d tried watching an early episode and hadn’t fallen in love, so I quit.

I was so wrong. Once my husband and I started watching, we couldn’t stop. We blew through 6 seasons. And now we have a Parenthood-sized hole in our lives.

We need a new show, people. We need a new show fast.

I’ve found myself experiencing the following symptoms, and I’m pretty sure the cure isn’t more cowbell.

  • Googling the characters, certain they are still alive and functioning somewhere in the universe.
  • Looking around and noticing my family for the first time in months. One child has grown inches.
  • Wandering about the house aimlessly, unsure what to do with myself.
  • I glance at my husband with a look of pain. Wait, do we actually have to talk to each other now??? (This is a joke. Do not stress. Our marriage is intact.)Her-Texas-Family-253x400
  • Realizing I haven’t done laundry in weeks. Maybe months. Wasn’t the whole point (excuse) of the binge so that I could get lots done of that very thing?
  • Contacting my friends and admitting where I’ve been and what I’ve been doing. They are gracious with my Netflix problem and offer to pray for me.
  • Googling what to watch next that is similar to Parenthood, then panicking when I realize I’ve seen every possible suggestion.
  • Blogging about my obsession.
  • Dating three new shows before admitting that nothing fits the void. I then decide to give up on dating any new shows, certain there will never be another perfect match for me.

Help a girl out—leave a comment of your favorite show to binge watch in the comments. Maybe then I’ll finally recover. 😉

    1. Oh! I feel your pain! Not with that particular show – I don’t even have a clue as to what Parenthood is about. But the binge watching and then not knowing what to do with yourself, yeah, I totally get that. We just finished binging on Elementary and now are forced to wait for the new season to hit NetFlix – the torture of it all! I also love to binge watch reruns of Leverage (my favot TV show that they cancelled) and occasionally I find a marathon of the older NCIS when Ziva was still there and watch them for hours. I have the first two DVDs of Gilmore Girls coming, too. So I’ll probably have a new addiction before long (thanks for that, Melissa 😉 ). Good luck with your recovery! I’m going to go hide in a corner and count down the days until Elementary makes it to NetFlix, now.

    2. I’ve been thinking of trying out Parenthood, now I know I need to! Some of my recent binge watches have been How I Met Your Mother, Gilmore Girls, Bones, and White Collar! Hope you find a new show!

    3. I don’t binge watch a particular show, I watch sappy Hallmark type movies. Or I get in pattern of watching old movies. My sister and her family are binging on Gilmore girls again and Fixer Upper. I have to be careful when I call her house.
I do still need to watch the last season of Longmire, thanks for reminding me I was missing something.

    4. I am so bad at binge watching. Last summer I watched the entire series up to the current season of Once Upon a Time. I also can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched Gilmore Girls. But the one I’ll recommend to you is Rizzoli and Isles. It’s about two female best friends who are a medical examiner and a homicide detective and they solve crimes together. It may sound cheesy but it’s amazing. One of the only shows I know that focuses on two female best friends and their friendship. It’s on Hulu now.

    5. Parenthood is up next for me to binge through! Gilmore Girls was/is a favorite–I bawled at the end. And currently my sister and I are joint-binging (albeit slowly because I’m lame 😉 ) One Tree Hill and The Vampire Diaries and I’m solo-bingeing on White Collar.
