Don’t shoot…I’m part Italian!!*

So, the point of this photo is baby Nicole. But…are there not about a dozen disturbing things about it? My jeans, my glasses, Amy’s glasses and side ponytail (oh, wait, side ponytails are now cool again, yeah?), whatever Nathanael’s hiding behind his back? Most disturbing thing of all…the animal hide sprawled out on the wall behind us. How is Nicole not crying from fear?

I once promised my sister Nicole I’d write a blog about her. Well, her time has come. We’ll see if she’s still willing to claim me as her sister after this. Hehehe…

So, Nicole’s graduating from high school tomorrow. Even though I’ve known it was coming since, well, the day she started pre-k (yup, I was that confident in her even back then), it still freaks me out a bit…and makes me feel old…and proud. It also makes me want to say, “Please, pretty please, Nicole, promise to never move too far away from me and always watch ‘What’s Up Doc?’ at least a few times a year with me for the rest of our lives and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do…unless it’s eating sushi. I’m okay with that.”

Probably, though, the better, more conventional thing to say is, “Congratulations.” But um, when have I ever been conventional?

Okay, here’s what we’ll do. I won’t beg her not to move away. And I won’t settle for plain ol’ congrats. Instead, here’s a list of just some of the things I love, love, love about my baby sister who totally isn’t a baby anymore…

I love that she doesn’t hold stuff against her older siblings. Like this…

Or this…

I love that when people tell her she looks like me, she doesn’t flinch. Or, at least hides it from me if she does!

I love her creativity! Anyone can send a normal “thank you” note. But it takes someone like Nicole to send this…

I love her ingenuity…:)

I love how, age gap and all, she fit right into our family when she came along. We didn’t know before 1992 there was a missing piece to our family…

I love that she displays a serious writing talent. Hehe…(for the record, she had to have been waaaay young when she wrote this…)

I love that she’s not only unafraid of my craziness…she joins in.

I love that she liked me enough as a kid to write papers about me for school!

I love how cute she was then…

…and how beautiful she is now!

I love her musical talents…and how early they showed up!

Mostly, I just love that she’s my sister!

*Yup, totally an inside joke with Nicole. But if you can guess the reference, I’ll count you a kindred spirit…

  1. Good, I’m glad…:) My favorite is still the song you wrote about Amy and I…and how every other line is treble and bass clef. My other two faves: the head in the pan photo and the gingerbread story!

  2. I had no idea there were two writers in your family, M-Tagg. And your sister is also an artist and a musician. Wow, envy reigns.
And I will be happy to join the two of you in watching “What’s Up Doc?” any time, any where.
    “Howard. Howard Bannister . . .”

And your blog title is from “What’s Up Doc?”– Hugh says that!

  3. Ahhh, Beth, you totally got the quote!! I knew there was a reason we were “kindred spirits” (another quote from another movie fave)…And yes, Nicole is awesome. Maybe I’ll bring “What’s Up Doc” to a future writing retreat and we can analyze it for story elements! 🙂
