Classic Cinephiles Take #1

I love old movies, right? Like, if I were to parody this timeless video (remember the eHarmony cat lady?), I’d gush about old movies in place of cats.

Well, my friend and fellow author Clay Morgan also loves classic movies. I’m not sure, but he might even spend as much time Wikipedia/IMDb-ing movie faves as I do.

So OF COURSE we decided to collaborate and bring our love of these movies to the big screen…or small screen…or whatever size screen you happen to watch YouTube videos on. We’re launching a series of videos about sweet classic movies with our takes, trivia, etc. And we’re calling it Classic Cinephiles…because isn’t that a cool-sounding name?

Clay gets credit for the idea.
I get credit for not falling off my chair in excitement over talking about old movies.

FYI, Clay Morgan is great not just because of his good taste in movies, but also because he’s the author of Undead: Revived, Resuscitated, and Reborn. It’s about zombies and Jesus and life, and is both poignant and hilarious. You can connect with Clay at www.claywrites.com.

So, for our first movie, we picked The Philadelphia Story because it is classic cinema GOLD and is the best of the best as far as casting. Honestly, I probably could’ve talked about this movie for hours.

Speaking of length: We realize this first video is a little long. It clocks in at just over 10 minutes. Basically we want to see how many of our friends really love us. Sticking it out for a whole ten minutes is a pretty good indicator.

But seriously, this was our first attempt and we were experimenting, so it got long. (That and I refused to cut Clay’s drunk Jimmy Stewart impression.) The plan is to shorten it up from here. And you can help us with that by watching and then telling us what you think.

What did you like? What didn’t you like?* What should we keep/ditch? Advice for future vids? And most importantly…have you seen The Philadelphia Story and do you agree that it is probably the best rom-com EVER??

*Other than me looking like I’m going to cry in the thumbnail. And my bangs. Look, I realize they’re at that awkward “what the heck?” stage…but I just don’t have time to care about them!!

    1. Ah can’t believe he hasn’t seen Some Like It Hot! Great movie!
I love love love A Philadelphia Story! And I agree with you Melissa that the scene were Jimmy Stewart is drunk is probably the best! My sisters and I like to shout “Oh C.K. Dexter Haven” repeatedly just for fun! We also quote many other parts! Some of our favorites are “This is the Voice of Doom calling. Your days are numbered, to the seventh son of the seventh son.” and the “Hello Dexter, Hello George, Hello Mike” one. We also like to torment our youngest sister Lydia by singing the Lydia the Tattooed Lady song!
So needless to say I completely agree with your opinions of this movie and now I really feel the need to go rewatch it!
I thought the way you did everything was great though it would be a random fun addition to share some of your favorite quotes from the movies!

      1. Yes Abbi, I need to fix this shortcoming of films I haven’t seen. And I LOVE that you picked that line where she says hello to each one. That was hilarious.

    2. I like just about anything with Cary Grant in it, but confession: I am pretty sure I started this movie and couldn’t finish it. But I could be wrong…and I’m willing to try again if so! 🙂 Can we still be friends?

      1. WHAT?

        Ok.
        Deep breath.
        Ok.
We can still be friends, Linz. But just know that from here on out, one of my goals in life will be to convert you to a Philadelphia Story fan.

    3. I’m pretty sure I saw this when it first came out. (joking) I know I’ve seen it, but I must watch it again now. And I did see Some Like It Hot with an old boyfriend who tried to get me to go out with him again last year. lol Watched Psycho with him, too. Wow…they just don’t make movies like they used to!
Love this format and you two are great together.

    4. You intrigued me enough that I’ve just ordered The Phil. Story from my local library. This was fun & I know you’re promising more to come 🙂

    5. That was a f-a-s-t 10 minutes & 32 seconds (yes, I watched it all, which makes me your BFF, M-Tagg, & Clay’s new BFF.)
Loved the music. Loved the black and white clips. Loved Clay’s impersonation of Jimmy Stewart — he’s one of may favorite actors. (JS, not Clay. Sorry, Clay.) Loved the several moments of confusion.
      Y’all do “banter” well.
And The Philadelphia Story is one of my fave classic movies.
Yes, I did “gasp!” when I heard that Clay hadn’t watched Some Like It Hot.
You will be discussing Bringing Up Baby, right?

      1. Yay, glad you liked it, Beth! Among my favorite things about you is that you have great taste in movies…I remember quoting What’s Up Doc around you once and you knew what I was talking about and if I didn’t like you before (which I did), I loved you then.

And Bringing Up Baby has to be on the list. And maybe I will sing “I can’t give you anything but love, baby” for the video. Maybe.

      2. Yes, you must sing that, Melissa, but the real question is, can Clay imitate a leopard?
        “George! George! Come here, George!”

(Which, of course, is not what a leopard says.)

      3. Ha, we’re BFFs for sure now Beth. As for impressions, I suppose I could butcher a few here and there. btw Melissa, I think the first film we break from classic Hollywood for will be What’s Up Doc?

    6. I think one of my favs is the Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer! Also anything with Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy (Desk Set is another fav of mine)! So glad you’ve started this series!

      1. Ooh, I like Desk Set, too. And the Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer has a grown-up Shirley Temple in it, right? I always get it confused with Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House…I think solely because of all the B’s in both.

    7. I absolutely agree with you on Philadelphia Story, with a close second to Bringing Up Baby. I think all three of those actors are pretty much brilliant at any role they played. I love, love, love movies from this era. The writing is so fabulous and those words are spoken but amazing actors. Can’t wait to see what you have coming in future episodes of the series!

      1. It’s so true, all three are genius in everything. I know there are a lot of great movies today … but not a lot have the kind of dialogue brilliance you find in these older ones. And I LOVE Bringing Up Baby…”When you hear the tone, the time will be 7:40…”

    8. That was fun! I’m looking forward to more – and this one wasn’t too long for me. 🙂

Jimmy Stewart and Katharine Hepburn are my two favorite actors, and yet I have never seen this movie. Even though I own it. I feel like I should apologize or something.

    9. Oh my stars, yes! I adore ‘Philadelphia Story.’ It has whip smart dialogue and wow-zers it just sparkles with fun. 😉 Don’t know if I think it’s the bestest rom-com but it is SPECTACULAR – and for sure could very possibly be *the* original rom-com.

You guys make me want to re-watch my DVD again!

This was way fun, Melissa and Clay. Love it. But then, always love your posts, Melissa. 🙂

      1. Definitely one of the originals if not “the” original. Well, It Happened One Night might be the original…AHH…I love that movie. Philadelphia Story still tops it, but IHON comes awfully close. 🙂

      2. Don’t think I’ve seen ‘It Happened One Night.’ Not sure. Also like all the Deanna Durbin movies, ‘Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer’ and probably many others also. 🙂

    10. LOVE LOVE LOVE Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn and really, all movies from that time period. So happy to hear you chatting on them, I can get my fix b/c around here no one wants to watch them with me:)
