Gilmore Guys (a guest series) . . . JACKSON! featuring Sarah Varland and a giveaway

GGheader.jpg

It’s Gilmore Guys Fridays! Almost every week I explain what this blog series is about, so this week I’m going to spare you the explanation. However, if this is your first visit to this little corner of the Triple W (yes, I made up my own moniker for the world wide web), feel free to check out past explanations and fabulous posts from all our too-cool guests. So far, the lineup has included posts about Jess (love), LoganLukeMartyMaxKirk, and Jason “Digger” Stiles.

This week we have with us the lovely Sarah Varland. I met Sarah at a writing conference last year and ever since we’ve bonded over our shared love for Gilmore Girls. Sarah’s latest book, Treasure Point Secrets, released in May…AND it’s up for grabs along with several other items in this week’s Gilmore Guys giveaway. More details below.

Sarah is writing about one of Stars Hollow’s sweetest, nicest and funniest men (and also the guy with the best photo pajamas ever): Jackson. One of my very favorite episodes in all of Gilmore Girls is from Season 2 when Jackson proposes to Sookie (and Jess buys Rory’s basket at the auction and Luke grumbles his way through a picnic with Lorelai…basically it’s one of the best couples-focused episodes of the series). Enjoy!

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAI love a good Gilmore guys debate just as much as the next crazy fan. I’ve had them on facebook several times, joined in on the one on twitter at the very end, and even talked to total strangers about it in the line at Starbucks (no joke). I’m very much pro-Luke, in case you’re curious (though I also like all of the other Lorelai guys for different reasons), and pro-Jess (though I like Logan fine and original Dean—not season four dean).

But in all of the debate and drama about which guys Lorelai and Rory should have ended up with, I think we miss one of the objectively best guys of the entire Gilmore Girls series. Maybe the best guy.

Jackson Belleville (as he reminds us when he’s running for town selectman, that’s four l’s)

Work with me here for a minute, y’all. Jackson is the perfect guy.

  • He’s crazy loyal to his crazy wife. Let’s face it. Sookie is awesome, but she’s just a little bit off sometimes. Don’t believe me? Picture her hugely pregnant self sneaking into the Dragonfly Inn to taste the food Luke prepared and make sure he strained the duck sauce twice (not three times—“then it’ll be too runny!”).  During this fiasco, Jackson drove her around so she wouldn’t be violating her “bed rest” sentence, and was even mad at Luke (and Lorelai, although Sookie tells him that’s not necessary) on Sookie’s behalf.

  • He and Sookie are partners in everything. They’re the ultimate example of a team marriage. When Sookie has to work late, or um, says she has to and is really sneaking Toblerones and watching old TV shows…He’s fine with her being gone. We see him snuggling the babies just about as much as Sookie does. When he runs for town selectman, Sookie runs his campaign. And on a less stellar-citizen note, they pulled together as a team to dispose of all that pot Jackson found on his back acreage (“I told them to weed the back half-acre!”).
Awww, cutest Sookie and Jackson photo ever...

  • He loves his family. When I think of Jackson’s family I think of Roon. And I shudder. And I think of his brother. And I shudder. And I think of Sookie’s lovely turkey being dunked into that fryer on Thanksgiving by his family. And I shudder again. But Jackson loves his family. He treats them with kindness. He’s also not afraid to stand up to them, which he does on more than one occasion (usually for Sookie—remember their first date??).
Remember that time Ron Swanson (aka Nick Offerman) played Jackson's brother?

  • He tries to help friends out whenever he can. When Lorelai needed someone to befriend Christopher after they got married and try to help him fit into the town, Jackson stepped in and went out for a beer with him. When the Dragonfly Inn needed zucchini for its grand opening, he slept in the zucchini patch to make sure it didn’t get too cold. I can’t think of a time he ever refused to help anyone who need it.

  • He is the ultimate nice-guy. And for once, the nice guy doesn’t finish last. When the show ends Jackson has his dream job, he has a wife he’s in love with who can cook, two adorable kids, another on the way (okay, not telling his wife that he didn’t  follow through with her anti-more-kids surgery plan was not his most shining moment…), and his life is perfect. His extended family is a bit crazy, but they don’t live in Stars Hollow anyway. His life there is perfect. As it should be for a guy like him.

No matter how much you’re team Luke, Logan, Jess, or whoever else…You really can’t deny that Jackson is the most perfect guy Stars Hollow has to offer.

Sarah Varland lives in the woods in Georgia with her husband John, their two boys, and their dogs. Her passion for books comes from her mom, her love for suspense comes from her dad who has spent a career in law enforcement. Her love for romance comes from the relationship she has with her husband and from watching too many chick flicks. When she’s not writing fiction or chasing her boys around, she’s often found reading, baking, kayaking, or hiking.

Haha, nobody offered to write a post on him! I can’t find anyone who likes him! BUT if you’d like to write one, you’d be more than welcome. I’m happy to keep the series going as long as people keep writing/reading posts. LOL! So just let me know… 🙂

Will do. YAY Dean will finally get a say…I have a feeling people won’t be all that nice to him in the comments. 🙂 So you are brave for tackling it. I’ll send you a msg shortly.

    2. I like Jackson. He was always supporting Sookie ‘ s crazy plans Luke a good supportive husband should.

It’s true! And Sookie supported him too…I love how she doesn’t even blink an eye at the thought of him sleeping with the zucchini. Also, it took me like five tries to get the spelling of zucchini right.

    4. I finally updated your rss feed on my reader–I kept wondering why your posts weren’t showing up!! Ugh!!

Now, don’t throw rotten tomatoes at me, but I didn’t watch the Gilmore Girls. I’ve seen an episode or two, so I know I would love this show! But the time commitment… 🙂

Haha I would never throw rotten tomatoes at someone who hasn’t watched Gilmore Girls. Instead I would throw verbal encouragement to watch it. It’s just that fun and witty. But yes, a time commitment. And pretty much once you start watching, you’re hooked…

    5. My favorite thing about Jackson is that he isn’t a morning person. But I love that everything he hears in the morning registers EVENTUALLY. 🙂 Story of my life!

For sure…I mean, except for that one pretty big lie near the end of the series…which results in Sookie being pregnant without having realized it was possible… 🙂

    6. I love Jackson! He is one of the best guys on Gilmore Girls! He is so sweet and a little quirky. He is perfect for Sookie!

    7. Sounds like a great guy! I only watched the first season or two of Gilmore Girls… sounds like I should check more of them out…

I would highly recommend it. I love the early seasons (one-four). Five and six are still pretty good, but not my favorite. Season 7 is pretty atrocious, but it does have good moments too.

    8. I forgot about Jackson but he is a really good guy. 🙂 And he definitely add to the show. These posts are making me want to start at season one and completely reach the whole series…now to just find the time.

Thanks, I think we’re gonna do that. Yesterday’s post was supposed to be the end, but two more guests have joined the bandwagon in the past few days…so we’re going on for at least two more weeks. YAY! Basically this is a topic that doesn’t get old. 🙂

    9. I don’t know who Jackson is. I don’t think I have ever seen an episode of this series. We don’t have TV at home, so it is difficult to keep up on these things. But…I love to read, so I would love to win a copy.
